Hi Shawn -
Good to see herba mate in one of your recipes. I love the tea and usually drink it Argentine style (in a bombilla gourd). I can’t drink it anytime after around lunch time though otherwise I have trouble sleeping. I assume that’s due to the caffine content. Green tea seems to fare a bit better in my system. What’s your take on naturally caffinated teas like herba mate and green? I’ve never tried the decafinated varieties because I fear the nutritional content and flavor would be badly compromised. Any tips?
Erich, what an excellent insight. You’re a lot like me in that you’re body is very sensitive to stimulants. I LOVE Yerba Mate, but if I have more than a cup or two it definitely effects my sleep (especially if I have it late in the day.
I have a good friend from Argentina, and she enlightened me to the gourd and the cool social aspects of drinking Mate. You’re definitely doing it the best way ever.
To answer your question, humans have been consuming plants that have natural stimulants for thousands and thousands of years. It’s certainly a valuable thing for us to have access to. The whole key is using these plants with respect, and not overusing them and getting our system out of balance. The decaffeinated versions are really sort of pointless in my opinion. You are definitely going to be missing out on some of the nutrients that are bound to the caffeine molecules, so the best bet is to go for the real stuff but use it the way your body responds best to long-term.
that was FUN! happy to see you sharing the wisdom and spreading your success.
I’m going to make some right now with my new Vitamix!
We’re all still feeling warm and toasty inside… And you’ve got the right equipment to do it REALLY nice. Enjoy! (My wife even took some in a thermos when she left to go to work. Deliciously addictive.)
